"Susu" in the Upper West Region of Ghana
Anita Sutha, a junior high school teacher by profession, also coordinates a number of women's groups in her area. She is seen with members of a "susu" group - an informal savings and loan club - that she coordinates in her home village of Gbengbee in the Upper West region of Ghana. She also acts as as an assistant to Pognaa Tang I: a pognaa is responsible, in particular, for the wellbeing of women and children in her area of authority. While the title translates as "woman chief", in practice her authority is subject to a male chief. The role of the pognamine (plural of pognaa) is being revived after having been suppressed during the colonial era, and they are increasingly seen as a force for development.
