Pognaa Napog Kpintaatobo I
Pognaa Napog Kpintaatobo I flanked by elders who provide counsel and act as her assistants in the village of Baazing in the Upper West Region of Ghana on 24 June 2015. A pognaa is responsible, in particular, for the wellbeing of women and children in her area of authority. While the title translates as "woman chief", in practice her authority is subject to a male chief. The role of the pognamine (plural of pognaa) is being revived after having been suppressed during the colonial era, and they are increasingly seen as a force for development.
