Mbera Market in Mauritania
Goats for sale at a market in Mbera, Mauritania on 8 March 2013. The market is located in the 'village' of Mbera - the site of the original refugee camp created for Malian refugees fleeing conflict in the early 1990s. It now serves the village as well as the new refugee camp, which is home to approximately 70 000 refugees who have fled the current conflict. Most of the residents of Mbera traditionally consume a diet of milk and meat, but rations provided are of rice. Many refugees sell or barter their rations in the attempt to purchase meat and milk from goats such as these.
