Food Security in South Sudan
Helen Katerina Francis’ husband is a government soldier. Helen says that he has been away for a long time, and provides no support to the family (locals indicate that soldiers frequently go unpaid), leaving her to fend for herself and their children and two elderly grandparents. Helen had been living with a brother who was helping to support them, but he recently passed away and the family is facing hard times—she described having fed them nothing but pumpkin leaves for the past week. She is seen cooking a bowl of sorghum from her meagre supply at her home in Gunyoro village in Eastern Equatoria, South Sudan on 9 August 2014. Together with pumpkin leaves it be dinner for a group of eleven adults and children.
