Young girls from northern Ghana find their way to the city in the hope of earning an income. Most, like these girls in Old Fadama, end up working as head porters in markets for very little pay. Incredibly vulnerable, they frequently suffer sexual abuse. 10 girls share this windowless, bare room, each paying GHC1.50 (approx. $1) a week in rent. Maria Mohammed (left) moved to the city from Tamale. She is married, but does not live with her husband who is a scrap merchant. Fadila Iddrisu (center) arrived with her sister two months ago from Kpalaga. Manunatu Iddrisu (no relation, right) travelled from Tolon one maonth ago, also hoping to improve her economic situation. It is her second trip to the city - the last one did not work out, and she says this time is also not going well as she cannot find enough work. She thinks she will return to the north.
