Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Surgical Unit in Bassikounou, Mauritania
Aichatou Abdulraman waiting for her son, Ahamad Ibrahim (19 months), to wake after the treatment of his burns at the recently completed MSF surgical unit in Bassikounou, Mauritania on 2 March 2013. Now that the surgical unit is operational, surgical emergencies no longer have to be referred to the nearest government hospital, which is six hours away.
