Shea Butter Processing in Ghana
Sophia Bugrmeh carrying a basin of shea nuts to be boiled at her homestead in the village of Berwong in the Upper West Region of Ghana. The nuts grow wild, and are harvested and processed by hand to produce a butter that is used for cooking as well as on the shin. Though a very labour-intensive process, it is an important source of income for women in the region. Shea nuts that have already been boiled and de-husked can be seen drying on the rooftop in the foreground.
