Weaving inthe Upper West of Ghana
Cloth being woven on a traditional loom in the village of Nanyaare in the Upper West region of Ghana. Pognaa Maabuora Sanduo I has facilitated the training of weavers in her community, as the sale of the cloth and clothes fashioned from it provides the women of her community with an income stream. A pognaa is responsible, in particular, for the wellbeing of women and children in her area of authority. While the title translates as "woman chief", in practice her authority is subject to a male chief. The role of the pognamine (plural of pognaa) is being revived after having been suppressed during the colonial era, and they are increasingly seen as a force for development.
