Ghana Queen Mothers

A queen mother is a traditional female leader, drawn from the relevant chiefly lineage, who is responsible for women's and children's issues in particular. Though often widely respected and sometimes powerful, especially in matrilineal ethnic groups, their authority is subject to a male chief. After being suppressed during the colonial era, the role of queen mother is being revived in Ghana and is seen by many as a force for development.
