The Burning Yard
A butcher singeing the hair off a duiker carcass before it is butchered and sold in Atwemonom, the main bushmeat market, in Kumasi, Ghana on 6 September 2016. It is hot and dirty work, and leaves an acrid odour and a layer of greasy soot on everyone and everything. He is paid by the carcass.
Carcasses were delivered to this area, often by hired porters who unceremoniously dumped a sack and disappeared. Hunters themselves remained unseen - according to a Forestry Commission inspector responsible for logging wildlife deliveries, they feared arrest for hunting in contravention of a hunting ban. He made no offical records of illegal deliveries, writing entries instead for "grasscutters" (greater cane rats), which were the only legal quarry at the time.
