Pognaa Dogkudome Tegzuylle I
Pognaa Dogkudome Tegzuylle I with women making shea butter in her home village of Lyssah in the Upper West Region of Ghana. Though incredibly labour-intensive, shea butter production provides an important income stream for many women in the Upper West, and is one major focus the Pognaa's development efforts in her community. The term "pognaa" is the feminine equivalent of "naa", or chief. A pognaa is responsible, in particular, for the wellbeing of women and children in her area of authority. While the title translates as "woman chief", in practice her authority is subject to a male chief. The role of the pognamine (plural of pognaa) is being revived after having been suppressed during the colonial era, and they are increasingly seen as a force for development.
