"Susu" in the Upper West Region of Ghana
The cashbox of a women's "susu" group - an informal savings and loan club - in the village of Gbengbee in the Upper West region of Ghana. The women's activities are supported by Pognaa Tang I - a pognaa is responsible, in particular, for the wellbeing of women and children in her area of authority. While the title translates as "woman chief", in practice her authority is subject to a male chief. The role of the pognamine (plural of pognaa) is being revived after having been suppressed during the colonial era, and they are increasingly seen as a force for development.
