Spirit Child

In parts of Ghana, a child with a disability might be referred to as a ‘Spirit Child’ – one believed to have suffered a curse, perhaps as the result of perceived parental or familial wrongdoing, or as the embodiment of spiritual warfare. They are often hidden away to conceal a family’s shame, or sometimes even ritually killed.

Through these portraits, I sought to re-define the words ‘Spirit Child’; to eschew clichés, stereotypes and superstition, and portray instead the spirt of the child.
