There is a growing consensus that the mismanagment of the lagoon, and the practice of "atsiakpo" in particular, is causing a rapid decline in the Songor's ability to produce salt. In many places, like Medie (pictured), residents recall that in times past there was always salt to be harvested from the lagoon, but say that for years there has been none.
